Don't Let Gravity Get You Down: Understanding Fall Protection Training

Why Fall Protection Training is a Must in Construction
Falls are a serious and all too common risk in the construction and industrial industries. Every year, workers are injured or even killed due to falls on the job. That's why fall protection training is an absolute must.

Let's not forget that it is also the law. It is mandatory for workers on construction projects in Ontario, who may be exposed to certain fall hazards, to complete Working at Heights training, follow by refresher training every three years. It is also the responsibility of the employer in other sectors to take every reasonable precaution to protect their workers from all types of fall hazards.
What can you do?
First and foremost, proper planning is crucial. By identifying potential fall hazards ahead of time, companies can take the necessary steps to minimize risks. This includes implementing safety measures and utilizing the hierarchy of control, which prioritizes eliminating hazards altogether, followed by substituting them with less dangerous alternatives, implementing engineering controls, and finally relying on administrative controls and personal protective equipment.
Winter is coming!
Fall protection training is especially important during winter months when slippery surfaces and adverse weather conditions increase the risk of falls. Workers need to know how to safely navigate these hazards and use appropriate fall protection equipment to prevent accidents.

Using protective equipment outdoors poses its own set of hazards. For example, cold temperatures, freezing rain and snow can impact the ability of fall arrestors (rope grabs), self-retracting lifelines and personal fall limiters to work properly.  Sadly, the fatal fall accident that occurred in Belleville last year points to this fact. Always check the manufacturer's instructions to see if you can use their equipment in cold conditions.

By investing in fall protection training that includes workplace specific information, companies not only ensure the safety and wellbeing of their employees but also increase productivity. Workers who are confident in their ability to protect themselves from falls are more focused and efficient, leading to better results on the job.
Critical Components of Effective Fall Protection Programs
An effective fall protection training program should consist of several critical components to ensure that workers are adequately prepared to protect themselves from falls on construction sites.
  1. First, comprehensive education on workplace specific fall hazards is essential. Workers should be trained on how to identify potential fall hazards, such as unprotected edges, unsecured ladders, and slippery surfaces. They should also understand the consequences of falls and the importance of following proper safety protocols.
  2. Next, practical training in the proper use of fall protection equipment is crucial. Workers should be trained on how to properly inspect, fit, and use harnesses, lanyards, and other equipment. They should also receive hands-on training on how to properly set up and use fall protection systems, such as guardrails, safety nets, and personal fall arrest systems.
  3. Regular refresher training is also essential to ensure that workers stay up to date with the latest safety protocols and equipment. Fall protection technology is constantly evolving, and workers need to be aware of any updates or changes that may impact their safety.
  4. Lastly, an effective fall protection training program should include clear communication and reinforcement of safety expectations. Workers should be encouraged to speak up if they observe unsafe practices or have concerns about their own safety.
  5. A culture of safety should be fostered, where all workers feel empowered and supported in their efforts to protect themselves and their colleagues from falls.

Overall, fall protection training is essential to prevent accidents, protect workers, and create a culture of safety. It's a small investment that can save lives and make a significant impact on the success of projects.
