THE DETAILS

Respirators protect workers from a wide range of airborne hazards — dust, fumes, vapours, chemicals, and biological contaminants. Choosing the right respirator and ensuring it fits properly is essential for staying safe on the job.

Workers in construction, industrial environments, farming, healthcare, restoration, and asbestos or mold removal often rely on respirators when other controls can’t fully eliminate exposure.

During fit testing, workers learn how to select the right mask and filters, how to put the respirator on correctly, and how to check that it’s functioning the way it should.
  • For a respirator to work, it must create a tight, reliable seal with the wearer’s face.
  • The wrong size, the wrong model, or even facial hair can compromise that seal and reduce protection.
  • Participants must be clean shaven to ensure a proper fit.

A respirator that doesn’t fit properly simply can’t protect you — it’s as unsafe as not wearing one at all.

Who Should TAKE FIT TESTING?

This Respirator Fit Testing service is essential for any worker who relies on a tight-fitting respirator to stay safe on the job. Workers in construction, industrial settings, healthcare, agriculture, restoration, asbestos work, and manufacturing must be fit tested before they use a respirator and regularly throughout their employment.

Workers need fit testing:
  • Before they use a respirator for the first time
  • When receiving respirator training
  • Whenever the make, model, or size of the respirator changes
  • When physical changes could affect the seal - such as weight gain or loss, dental changes, surgery, or facial injury
  • When PPE changes - like new eyewear or face shields that may interfere
  • When a worker reports discomfort or difficulty completing a user seal check
  • At least every 2 years, as required by CSA Z94.4
Fit testing ensures that the respirator seals properly, fits comfortably, and provides the intended protection. Any worker who depends on a respirator to protect them from dust, fumes, chemicals, vapours, mold, asbestos, or biological hazards should complete fit testing regularly to stay compliant and safe.

what you learn

  • Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing using Bitrex or irritant smoke to confirm a proper seal
  • How to care for and clean your respirator so it continues to protect you over time
  • How to inspect your respirator for damage, wear, or anything that could affect the fit
  • The limitations of your respirator - what it can and cannot protect you from, and when a different type of protection is needed
