the Details

Workers in surface mining face some of the highest-risk environments in Ontario, and proper training is essential for keeping people safe. Under R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 854: Mines and Mining Plants, all full-time and part-time production employees must complete the Surface Miner Common Core and the specialty modules for the equipment they will operate.

Our Surface Miner Common Core program helps workers understand the hazards, responsibilities, and safe work practices unique to surface mining operations. From equipment operation to ground control and communication, we help your team build the skills and confidence they need to work safely in demanding conditions.
Common Core (770210)
  1. Work Safely in the Municipal Pit and Quarry Environment  - U5030
  2. Lock out and Tag Mobile or Portable Equipment and Stored Energy  - U5031
  3. Operate Hand Tools  - U5032

How to become fully accredited

To become fully accredited under Ontario’s Surface Miner Program, participants must complete both the classroom training and the mandatory workplace-based assessments required by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD).

After completing the in-class portion, workers must:
  • Return to their workplace and demonstrate practical competency in the tasks and equipment relevant to their role
  • Show they understand and can apply government legislation, company-specific policies, and manufacturer specifications
  • Be evaluated and signed off by a qualified in-house trainer or supervisor who is authorized to assess their performance
  • Have their completed training documentation submitted and registered with the MLITSD by the employer’s signing authority

This process ensures each worker is not only trained, but also fully capable of performing their duties safely in real surface mining conditions, using the equipment, procedures, and standards specific to their operation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Surface mining is a high-hazard environment, and every worker on site needs the right training to stay safe and legally compliant. Surface Miner Common Core is mandatory for anyone working in a surface mining operation in Ontario, whether they’re new to the industry or experienced and taking on new duties.

This training is ideal for:
  • New surface mining employees (full-time or part-time)
  • Production workers starting work in a mine or mining plant
  • Equipment operators who need mandatory specialty modules
  • Labourers, operators, and support staff working on active mining sites
  • Maintenance and service crews working around mining equipment
  • Contractors and subcontractors entering surface mining locations
  • Supervisors and lead hands responsible for safe operations
  • Workers transitioning from construction or industrial sectors into mining
  • Anyone who needs to understand:
    • ground control
    • equipment hazards
    • communication in high-risk areas
    • regulatory requirements under Reg. 854
