CSA Z1006-16: NEW VERSION OF THE STANDARD FOR CONFINED SPACES: 2016
In 2016, the CSA Group revised standard Z1006-16 for Confined Spaces. Though the CSA standard is not mandatory and is not referenced in CONFINED SPACES REGULATION (O. REG. 632/05), it serves as a guide to optimize training and work practices when working in hazardous and unsafe situations. Below are a few of the highlights regarding training:
1. Workers entering confined spaces must have been trained or have received a set of training courses specific to their roles regarding the associated risks and procedures in order to perform work in confined spaces.
2. Training must be carried out at least every three years or at a shorter interval.
3 Refresher training and a skill assessment should be taken at least once a year.
3. Management must keep a training record including the course title as well as the name and signature of the trainer and the training provider. The record shall also indicate the date of the next training session, the training level (or certificate type) as well as the methods to evaluate the learning and determine if the workers are capable of applying the teachings.
4. It is recommended that rescue exercises be performed at least twice a year or before entering. All rescue exercises must be documented.
