Who should take this course?

In Ontario, it is mandatory for a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) to be in effect for workplaces with 20 or more employees. Even in workplaces where a committee is not required by the law, the benefits of a joint committee in addressing workplace health and safety needs are widely recognized.

For workplaces between 5-19 employees, a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) must be selected by fellow workers. The HSR is expected to perform the same roles as a JHSC. Smaller companies can still form a committee on a voluntary basis even where one is not mandatory. Working together through the JHSC can help ensure a healthy and safe workplace and improve workplace culture as a whole. Having a committee in a smaller workplace can also help in the sharing of duties and lighten the load for everyone.
