DESCRIPTION

Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) describes a supervisor as anyone who “has charge of a workplace or authority over a worker.”  OHSA Regulations also state that supervisors must receive training in their responsibilities within one week of starting their role at the workplace.

A supervisor will have specific workplace duties such as those listed below. Most importantly, a supervisor is also subject to specific OHSA regulations and Ministry of Labour fines and penalties if they fail to perform their duties in a manner that protects the health and safety of workers.  Our Supervisor
Awareness Course will help prepare you for success and inform you of the regulations, processes and procedures you must understand to protect yourself, your company and your workers.

Who is a supervisor:
The duties may vary from business to business, but overall you are considered a supervisor if you have the following responsibilities:

A person could also be a supervisor if they have some of the following responsibilities:

  • deciding on and arranging for equipment to be used
  • deciding the make-up of a work crew,
  • deciding on and scheduling hours of work,
  • dealing directly with workers' complaints, or directing staff and other resources to address health and safety concerns.
Primary indicators of being in a supervisory role include the power to:
  • hire, fire or discipline,
  • recommend hiring, firing or discipline,
  •  promote, demote or transfer,
  • decide a worker's rate of pay,
