Telehandlers are unique forklifts that feature telescoping booms. Often called zoom booms, they offer capabilities similar to both a crane and a forklift. Designed for rough terrain, the telehandler can handle outside work, and is often used to deliver materials to heights of 75 ft or higher and carry loads weighing as much as 75,000 lb or more.
As an employer, you have a legal responsibility to ensure your telehandler operators are trained to recognize specific hazards and stay safe at all times. To help you meet these obligations, we have designed our Class 7: Telehandler training to meet CSA standard B335-15. Clients are invited to submit in-house policies to be included during the training session. Student receive four hours of theory training to help them first understand how a forklift works, how to identify hazards and operate safely. This is followed by our practical training session. Our instructors work closely with students to ensure they can demonstrate how to inspect the machine, use controls, steer, brake, drive with control and lift loads safely. |

The Employer's Responsibilities
Workplace Specific Training
While initial training will offer the basics of safe forklift operation, it does not allow for the practice that is necessary to become a truly efficient and confident operator. We recommend that you enforce a policy for new operators to complete a set amount of hours under the direct supervision of a supervisor or competent operator before they can be permitted to work alone.
These hours may vary based on age, ability, and a willingness to follow direction. To help guide you with this decision, our trainers can submit a follow-up report to you with our recommendations for each operator. |
When hiring a skilled operator that is new to your company, you must follow through with worksite specific training as make and model, material handling, load capacities, docks, ramps, racking etc. will vary from workplace to workplace. They must also be trained on your company specific policies and procedures, inspection procedures, and the manufacturer's directions with clear direction provided and documented on all aspects of their expected duties.
Records of training must be kept and made available upon request to MLITSD Inspectors. |
